Can You Use Dental Sedation for Routine Visits?

Dental sedation is appropriate for a variety of needs and situations, such as patients receiving oral surgery or those who need help relaxing because they experience dental fear, have difficulty sitting still, or have had a traumatic dental experience in the past. Sedation dentistry is also helpful for patients with autism, cerebral palsy, or epilepsy.

For many patients, sedation dentistry is an option for any procedure, even routine visits. At Artistic Dentistry, we use different kinds of sedation for different situations.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation is administered through a prescribed pill before your appointment. So when your appointment begins, you’ll already feel a deep sense of calm and relaxation. You will feel so comfortable you may even feel drowsy or foggy, though you can easily be brought to attention to answer questions and talk to us. After, you may not remember specific details about your visit and you will need someone to drive you home for your safety.

Deeper Sedation

IV sedation is usually used for more complex procedures. This involves inserting a small needle into the back of your hand so the medication can be gently put into your bloodstream. We carefully control the amount of sedative and monitor you throughout your treatment.

Deep IV sedation is even stronger. This safely induces a state of unconsciousness during which you cannot speak or respond to questions. Like oral sedation, patients receiving IV sedation will need someone to drive them home.
